So, you’ve decided to invest your time and money into family photos. First, you deserve a pat on the back (and definitely that fancy coffee you only treat yourself with occasionally) because life.is.busy and it is all too easy to let the years slip by without capturing your family as you are right now. So I’m proud of you! And excited for you! But now it’s time to tackle a common conundrum: figuring out what to wear for family photos. I know it can seem really overwhelming and time-consuming, and the truth is the outfits really do make a huge difference in how your photos turn out, so let’s take the guesswork (and stress!) out of it. Read on for my top tips to help you confidently pick the perfect clothing for your session.
I know, I know: you saw the cutest outfit for your little one and want to style everything around it. But let’s be real – if you doesn’t feel amazing in your outfit, you might not feel comfortable during the session, worried about moving or sitting a certain way, constantly fussing with your neckline or the way your shirt hangs… and if that’s the case, you may not love the end results. So trust me when I tell you to start by choosing something that makes you feel confident and beautiful, then build the rest of the family’s outfits around yours.
Gone are the days of everyone in identical white shirts and khakis or black tops and jeans (thank goodness!). Instead of matching, aim for a well-coordinated color palette. Choose a mix of tones that complement each other without looking too uniform.
Pro Tip: Pick 3-4 colors that work well together and spread them throughout the outfits.
Too much pattern can be overwhelming, and too little can feel flat. Find a balance by mixing solids with subtle patterns and adding texture (think lace, embroidery, smocking, etc.) for extra visual interest.
Ideally, your color palette should complement both your session location and your home’s decor (because these photos will be on your walls, right?!). I generally recommend sticking to softer, more muted colors because they are easier to coordinate and work in most situations. But, if you’re a lover of color, you can incorporate brighter tones – just avoid primary colors (think Crayola 8ct box of crayons) and neons. Either way, be sure to add in neutrals to balance the look.
Your photoshoot style should be an elevated look that fits both your location and vibe. Planning a playful creek-side session? Flowy dresses, rolled-up pants, and bare feet will look much more natural than a tucked-in button-down and dress shoes. Aiming for a more traditional, posed look in the heart of downtown Cape Girardeau? A suit coat and sleek dress with heels can work really well.
Pro Tip: Google photos from the exact location where you’ll be shooting for inspiration. You may find a look you love (or hate! 🫣) to act as a guide.
Flowy, soft fabrics create gorgeous, in-the-moment photos. Dresses, skirts, or wide-leg pants that catch the breeze add movement and emotion to your images. A sheer sleeve or hem with the sun coming through also adds a touch of magic.
This is a big one! Black sneakers? They will be the first thing your eye is drawn to every time you look at the photo. Flip-flops? Straight to jail. Your child’s favorite Spiderman shoes? Probably not the vibe. Stick to neutral, timeless footwear that blends in with your outfit choices.
Utilitarian accessories like smartwatches, fitness bands, baseball caps, and silicone rings or bracelets might be part of your daily look, but they don’t belong here. Opt for classic, simple accessories instead.
Before picture day, try everything on and move around in it. Sit, walk, twirl, lift and hold your kids. Make sure your clothing is comfortable, doesn’t require constant adjusting, and isn’t sheer in the wrong places. And be mindful of wrinkles. I LOVE the way linen looks but unless you plan on standing around like a mannequin at your session, it’s not going to work.
Pro Tip: If you have clothing that wrinkles easily, wear something different for the drive and plan to change when you arrive at your location.
