Why Printing Your Family Photos Matters (And Why It’s More Than Just Pretty Decor)

Did You Know?

Printed photos displayed in the home build confidence in kids.

We live in a world where thousands of our photos live on our phones, but never make it out into the real world. They’re here and top of mind one second, then buried in the digital heap the next. And it’s so easy to forget how powerful it is to actually hold your memories or see them hanging on your walls every day.

When your kids see themselves in your home it tells them something big: you belong here, you are loved, you are part of this story. Psychologists have studied this for decades, and the findings all say the same thing:  kids who regularly see photos of themselves and their family around the house tend to feel more secure and confident. One researcher even called it a “visual reminder of connection” that helps shape a child’s sense of identity. Another study from Tulane University found measurable boosts (a 37% increase!) in self-esteem for children who saw themselves in printed photographs.

Another study that surveyed 15,591 families about the value of printed photos vs. digital images. Here’s what they found:

  • 76% of families surveyed agree printed photos help my family to connect in ways they wouldn’t normally with digital photos
  • 88% agree they feel closer to their family when they look at photos of their family
  • 86% appreciate their family more when looking at family photos
  • 77% feel a stronger connection to their child(ren) when looking at family photos
  • 73% feel a stronger connection to their spouse/partner when they look at family photos
  • 79% agree that looking at printed photos is a shared family experience

It’s hard to argue with those stats. And while those studies are lovely to read about, as a mom, I know it’s just common sense. When our kids are surrounded by proof of how deeply they’re loved, they feel it. So, whether we’re talking about family photos, capturing your crew just as they are in this season of life, or child portraits, printing those images ensures they become part of your family’s daily life – not just more photos buried deep in your phone or cloud storage, left behind and eventually forgotten.

A Case for Albums Too…

Wall art is wonderful and I especially love it for the self-esteem boosts for your children. But because you’ll eventually change it out as your family grows and new memories are made, albums are just as important, perhaps even more important as the years go by and your walls boast your updated family photos. Those older photos shouldn’t be tucked away in a storage box. Your investment and your memories should be tangible. Albums keep those moments alive and accessible, telling the whole story of your session, even decades later.

Ordering albums through your photographer means you don’t have to worry about clunky online design tools, awkward layouts, or images getting cropped in all the wrong places. I design albums for my clients from start to finish, carefully choosing the flow and arrangement so every page feels intentional. You get to skip the overwhelm and go straight to the joy of flipping through your finished book.

The Heart of It All

Printing your photos isn’t just about decorating your walls. It’s about giving your kids a sense of belonging and preserving your family’s story in a way they can see, touch, and revisit for years to come. Whether it’s a gallery wall, a few large framed prints on the living room wall, or a stack of albums on the coffee table, those printed memories become part of the fabric of your home. Digital files are great for sharing, but prints are for keeping.
